Unit Definition 1 U corresponds to the amount of enzyme which increases the absorbance at 305 nm by 0.001 per minute at pH 6.5 and 25°C (L-tyrosine as substrate, 3.0 mL reaction mix); 30 absorbance-U as described above are equivalent to ~1 U [when 1 U is the amount of enzyme which oxidyzes 1 μmol 4-methylcatechol per minute at pH 6.5 and 25°C]
